It has been more than a year since I have been contemplating the concept of « need ». Today, I 

am absolutely convinced that this concept sums up all the challenges of our next century: how 

can we manage to satisfy the needs of everybody on a planet with limited resources?

 

I kept asking myself this question, which appears to be essential, searching for a way to get 

answers. But the more advanced my reflection, the less the answers came; or they were still 

vague, subjective, open to interpretation. Despite all my good will and my sincere desire to 

understand, I could not define this concept of « need » in a proper way. So I started to interview 

people, among them, my relatives and friends, but also environmental activists and even 

philosophers... I asked each one of them the same six questions about their way of 

comprehending the world and their definition of the words « need » and « necessity ».

All the answers I gathered, have unlocked something in my mind: they helped me to understand 

that it was impossible to define the needs of every human being on this planet; however it 

became clearer that I could identify what was essential for every individual. It's as if I had a cake 

recipe, but the ingredient measurements remained unique to each person.

 

On this basis, I tried to widen my target of people interviewed in order to get a larger perspective 

on the subject. But I have to admit that I could not get the contrasted answers I was hoping for.

This is the reason why I decided to leave the old continent and travel to the American continent to get a better picture of mankind. All indicators have directed me towards the American continent where I could encounter a 

cultural shock between capitalism and alternative systems.

 

During this trip I would like to make 

a film where everyone can identify themselves and find their own wisdom. There will not be a 

unique  answer, but clearly in the multitude of collected 

answers, there will be one road that will appear as obvious.

I hope that this reflection will allow us to comprehend the concept of need both philosophically and practically.

 

In this world of the 21st century, where we are looking for certainties to build a sustainable 

future, we need to realize that most men and women on this planet share the same views on 

essential issues. We need to know it, to show it, to prove it. This is urgent.

 

We have the questions. We already started our quest.
